Mobile Brake Service in Miami: Rotor Resurfacing and Replacement

The surface comes out like new and the rotor is still yours. Stamped in the middle you can read MIN 26MM: the minimum thickness the manufacturer allows. If it measures above that, it gets resurfaced; if not, it has to be replaced.

Brakes are where most money gets wasted. I measure the rotor and tell you the truth: often it does not need replacing.

When the car shudders under braking or the wheel vibrates, almost nobody needs new rotors. What usually happened is the rotor surface wore unevenly, and that gets corrected by resurfacing it: a very thin layer comes off until it is flat and parallel again.

A resurfaced rotor with new pads stops the car just as well as a new one, and costs considerably less. New pads also bed in better on a freshly cut surface than on an old glazed one — which is why fitting new pads onto worn rotors tends to end in squealing and a return visit a month later.

The usual question

Resurface your rotors or buy new ones?

A front set is two rotors — they always get done in pairs, or the car brakes crooked. The labor is the same either way: only the part changes.

What I recommend

Resurface yours

$40per rotor

$80 both front rotors

  • You keep your original rotors, usually better material than a lot of aftermarket replacements
  • Kills the braking vibration and leaves the surface like new
  • New pads bed onto fresh material

If the rotor still has thickness above the manufacturer's minimum. I measure it in front of you.

When there is no choice

Buy new ones

$120-140per rotor

$240-280 both front rotors

  • More than double the cost of resurfacing the ones you have
  • You lose the car's original rotors
  • Stops just as well — but you overpaid if yours could have been saved

If they are below minimum, cracked, deeply scored or heat-damaged. No saving is worth it there.

Calculate your estimate
How many rotors?
Your vehicle, and the labor it takes
Ask usanother vehicle

One axle is two rotors, so four rotors take twice the labor. It is the same whether they get resurfaced or replaced — only the part changes.

Resurface yours $40 × 2 rotors + $140 labor $220

Buy new ones $120-140 × 2 rotors + $140 labor $380-420

You save $160-200 by resurfacing yours instead of buying new rotors

This is an estimate — the final figure can vary a little. It gets confirmed once I see the car and measure the rotors.

Prices cover rotors and labor. Any other parts needed (pads, sensors) are extra.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does rotor resurfacing cost?

It depends on how many rotors the job takes and what you drive, because labor is charged per axle. There is a calculator on this page: pick the rotors and the vehicle and it gives you the estimate, splitting out what is the part and what is the labor.

How do you know whether they can be resurfaced or have to be replaced?

Every rotor has its minimum thickness stamped on it. I measure it in front of you: if resurfacing leaves it above that minimum, it gets resurfaced and you keep your own rotors. If it would go below, or if they are cracked, deeply scored or heat-damaged, they have to be replaced — no saving is worth it there, that is safety.

Do both rotors need doing, or just the one that vibrates?

Both on the same axle, always. Do only one and that side brakes differently from the other, and the car pulls to one side when you brake.

Is the labor more expensive if I buy new rotors?

No. Pulling the wheel, removing, refitting and adjusting is the same work either way: the only thing that changes is what you pay for the part.

Are the pads included?

No. The price covers rotors and labor; pads, sensors or any other part needed are extra. Once I see the car I tell you what it needs and what the total is before I start.

Can you do it where the car is?

Yes, that is the usual way: I come to your home or your work with the tools and the job gets done right there. If you would rather bring it in, you can, with an appointment at the shop.
